The philosophy of SCDC maintains the belief that each individual child is unique. Children are seen as competent and capable beings and deemed as intrinsically good with the ability to learn. Honest, appropriate verbal and non-verbal expression of feelings is encouraged for everyone in the classroom.
SCDC features a curriculum that is play-based and child-centered with theme-organized lesson plans, in a multi-cultural, non-violent, non-sexist, inclusive atmosphere. The program is designed to meet the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of the developing child. Developmental planning includes activities which help promote the development of intellectual and motor (gross and fine) skills. Children are offered a wide variety of play activities in a supportive environment, are taught to foster friendships and to resolve conflicts without violence. The curriculum encourages awareness of diverse cultural and socio-economic groups and their positive contributions to our world. Exploration and creativity are encouraged; we focus on the process, not the product, of each child's work.
Multi-ethnic planning and inclusion is an important part of the children's program. As well as providing many different experiences for children, a program rich in diversity emphasizes the value of each individual.
Adults are seen as role models for the children. Adults use a positive guidance approach to help build each child's favorable self-image, telling children what they can do rather than what they cannot do. Adults interact with children in a manner that enhances personal development. Specifically, adults provide stimulating conversation, intervene to help settle problems and allow the children to work through problems on their own. Common guidance techniques at the Center are telling children expectations for their behavior, explaining cause and effect, and giving appropriate choices using positive language.
Parents are a vital part of the center. Ongoing communication between parents and staff aids in establishing a beneficial environment for all children. Parent concerns are taken into consideration and whenever possible, we meet their needs. Parent involvement and participation in the classroom is actively encouraged and highly recommended.
