Emergency Well-Child Care Services

When your child care provider is suddenly unavailable, and you need temporary care… The answer may be the Emergency Well-Child Care Service, offered at the Spartan Child Development Center


Who is eligible for the Emergency Well-Child Care Service?


Each MSU employee or student is eligible to use this service five days each year (September 1 — August 31) at no charge.

Through an agreement with Michigan State University, Spartan Child Development Center (SCDC) reserves three spaces each day the Center is open to meet the emergency child care needs of University Employees and students.

The service includes use of Spartan Child Development Center's program for children ages one to pre-kindergarten.

A child must be free of communicable disease and capable of participating in regularly planned activities in the classroom.


What does the Emergency Well-Child Care Service Offer?


Children will participate in regularly scheduled classroom activities, including:

     • Breakfast, lunch and snack
     • Nap and rest times
     • Inside and outside free play
     • Learning experiences from highly qualified staff


The service is available during the center’s regular hours of operation:
          7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday


How do employees and students use the Emergency Well-Child Care Service?


Call Spartan Child Development Center at 353-5154 to arrange care for your child (or children). Parents can call to arrange care up to two weeks in advance. You may be required to show immunization documentation. Same-day child care needs will be met when possible.

Parents should:

     • call ahead to reserve a space for your child
     • transport your child to and from the center
     • arrive a few minutes early to complete paperwork in the office, and to help your child settle into the class before saying goodbye
     • pick up your child before 6:00 p.m. Check out with classroom teachers by providing pictured identification


When you bring your child please provide:

     • food supplements for special dietary requirements
     • diapers as necessary
     • an extra set of clothing
     • a special toy or blanket for rest time


Feel free to call or visit during the day to check on your child.


A well child is defined as, a child:

     • with a temperature of 98.6
     • with no discernable symptoms
     • not using over-the-counter medications


The Emergency Well-Child Care Service is offered cooperatively by Spartan Kid Care, Inc. and Michigan State University. For more information about child and family care services, faculty, staff and students should call the MSU Child and Family Care Resources program at (517) 432-3745 Ext. 146
